At Abbott, we’re all about helping people live the best life they can through good health. We keep their heart healthy, nourish their bodies at every stage of life, help them feel and move better, and bring them information, medicines and breakthroughs to manage their health. Every day around the world, we’re discovering new ways to make life better.
For more than 125 years, Abbott has been building a legacy of innovation, specialisation, reliability and trust. We are dedicated to creating more possibilities for more people at all stages of life. Our business has brought new products and technologies to market for more than 125 years. We live and breathe innovation. We are proud to be ranked as one of the world’s most innovative companies based on the volume of patents filed and commitment to R&D spending.1 Through our four major businesses — diagnostics, established pharmaceuticals, medical devices and nutrition — we work constantly to stay ahead of healthcare trends and anticipate challenges with ground-breaking solutions.
Our vascular business exemplifies our constant pursuit of providing better solutions to a growing health challenge. Vascular diseases are still the number one cause of death in Europe, affecting the lives of millions of people.2
We strive to help people suffering from vascular diseases to enjoy the best life possible lives. We do this by providing advanced diagnostics and treatments that are less invasive than surgery. Today, Abbott is a leader in blood screening, drug-eluting stents, and coronary and mechanical circulatory systems, keeping the heart beating at a healthy rate. Our stents, along with diagnostic and imaging devices, offer doctors the right combination of tools to help them make better decisions at every stage – improving outcomes and people’s wellbeing.
Our modern 250,000-square-foot facility in Clonmel, Ireland, is a centre of excellence in the manufacturing of vascular devices. Here, we manufacture a broad range of vascular devices, including coronary and endovascular stent delivery systems.
At our distribution centres in Heerlen, the Netherlands, and Brussels, Belgium, we facilitate the revolutionary treatment of cardiovascular disease across Europe. In Heerlen, more than 125 employees process over 1500 orders per day, while our Brussels centre handles more than 1200 deliveries daily. Both are ISO 13485 (medical devices) and ISO 14001 (environmental) certified.
We earn trust for our brand and products through the highest standards of quality and safety, ethics and integrity. Behind every product that bears our name lie exacting standards of quality and excellence. Our employees understand the impact their work and our products have on people. To support them, we make sure they have access to the policies, training, resources and people they need to be able to meet the highest standards and expectations for integrity and ethics.
In 2017, we were for the fifth consecutive year ranked as the leading company in the healthcare equipment and services industry by the Dow Jones Sustainability Index. One of the most prestigious global benchmarks for corporate sustainability and responsibility in the world, this index recognises companies with outstanding performances in the areas of economic, environmental, and social responsibility.3 We are proud of this legacy, which is the result of our environmental and sustainability efforts. Our Global Sustainability Report 2016 shows that we work closely with our suppliers to apply the highest standards of environmental and social responsibility throughout our supply chain.
Abbott’s Global Environmental, Health and Safety Policy also means reducing our environmental impact. Ensuring environmental and social responsibility throughout our supply chain is key to enabling healthy living environments. We believe in fostering a work environment that promotes employee health and productivity. We continuously improve the efficiency and sustainability of our business activities and products, resulting in the lowering of greenhouse gas emissions and water use, and minimising wastes destined for landfill. The way that we report on our sustainability efforts reflects how our business helps people live full, healthy lives. We innovate new products to meet changing healthcare needs and develop new business models that create shared value for our communities as well as new systems that support the delivery of healthcare to those who need it most.
With our Environmental Procurement Guidelines we ensure that we incorporate sustainable sourcing principles into the purchasing processes from the outset. We privilege products and services that have a benign effect on human health and the environment while serving exactly the same purpose.
We cannot tackle every challenge. But what we can do is address the critical issues that best match our expertise. From strengthening the capacity of suppliers to creating products that address local health needs, we are always finding new opportunities to expand the positive impact of our people, products and business. We run our business in the right way, for the long-term and for the benefit of the many people we serve. Knowledge and optimism are resources that grow in value the more they are shared.
